The Honest Answer
The DVSA says the average learner needs 47 hours of professional instruction plus around 20 hours of private practice to pass their driving test. But averages can be misleading.
Factors That Affect How Quickly You Learn
Your Age
- 17-25 year olds tend to pick things up slightly faster
- Older learners often have better hazard awareness but may take longer with physical coordination
- There's no "too old" to learn — we've taught drivers of all ages
Your Confidence
- Naturally confident people may progress faster
- Anxious learners need more time but often become safer drivers
- Previous experience (even cycling) helps with road awareness
Lesson Frequency
- 2 lessons per week is the sweet spot for most learners
- 1 lesson per week means slower progress as you forget between sessions
- Daily lessons (intensive) can speed things up significantly
Private Practice
- Practising with family between lessons accelerates your learning
- Make sure your supervisor is over 21 and has held their licence 3+ years
- Focus on the skills your instructor is currently teaching
Realistic Timelines
| Learner Type | Estimated Hours | Timeline (2x weekly) |
|---|---|---|
| Quick learner | 30-35 hours | 3-4 months |
| Average | 40-50 hours | 5-6 months |
| Nervous/cautious | 55-70 hours | 7-9 months |
| Returning after break | 10-20 hours | 1-2 months |
